We currently have a serious need for Big Brothers in all our locations across Toronto. For more information please contact bbbst.com. The Boys Mentoring Program is an evidence-based program designed to address the physical activity, healthy eating/nutrition and self-esteem/communications skills of male youth. Male volunteers aged 18 - 26 are trained to be mentors to a group of young men with whom they meet once a week for 1 1/2 - 2 hour sessions. The main goal of the program is to develop an appreciation of the benefits of an active, healthy, lifestyle among boys and youth. Through the selection of more non-traditional physical activities, complemented with healthy eating support, the goal is to further engage youth in life skills, communication, and emotional health discussions. In addition, where possible, mentors are requested to provide a positive space for creative outlets such as writing, visual art, and photography. The program strives to meet the following key objectives: To provide boys and young men with a positive adult male role model To support boys and young men in choosing to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle To provide the tools and information needed to choose lead and maintain a healthy lifestyle To enhance competence, confidence, and self-esteem of boys and young men regarding healthy active living To build the leadership and life skills of all program participants (mentors and mentees)
The Boys Mentoring Program positively impacts health and wellness, and belonging and leadership for all student participants and volunteers. As a direct result of increased self esteem and the tools to make positive life choices, it is our belief that all young men will be better equipped to make positive decisions, be confident and find their voice. The pilot for Boys Mentoring for the 2009/2010 school year was made possible through funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion. 45 boys participated in 2 pilots, 2 groups per pilot with an age range of 11-15. One group was a middle school (grades 6-8) and the other group was a high school (grade 9). For more information, please contact us at: Email: bbbst.com Phone: (416) 925-8981 Ext. 4147
