Secondary students who are enrolled in their school's cooperative education program have an opportunity to pursue a placement as a volunteer mentor through Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Toronto in an elementary school in the Toronto area. The Toronto District School Board and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Toronto have partnered in this venture since 2001. Coop students receive a specific number of credits towards their high school diploma. Coop students can mentor four elementary students per week, September to June, depending on the number of credits received (four).
Activities focus on building trust, developing a friendship and increasing the child's self-esteem. Specific goals may be set depending on the child's needs. Coop students go through the same enrollment and screening process as all potential volunteers. Coop students must attend an orientation and training workshop prior to being matched. Coop students are also required to attend bi-weekly reflection meetings with the School Program Coordinator. During these meetings various topics are discussed to ensure appropriate support, guidance and direction is given to the students, and to help ensure match success.
