Each year Bigs and Littles work together on a special project - building a soap box kart to compete in the Annual Soap Box Derby. This year the Derby will be held on September 20th in High Park. The Derby is a very popular and exciting event in which Littles compete using gravity-fuelled karts on a hill in the park. Race day provides life-learning experiences for Littles. It is one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in Canada.

Originating in 1967, The Soap Box Derby and Celebrity Challenge for the Midas Gold Cup has become an institution. In its 42nd year, it is a major highlight of September’s Big Brothers’ and Big Sisters’ Month volunteer recruitment campaign. Community leaders and media personalities are also invited to compete in separate Derby races during the day to help raise awareness and have some fun!

Event participation is only open to Bigs and Littles, media and politicians. However, we love spectators and it is very fun to watch. Be sure to come out and cheer on the racers!
