The recipient of our 2014 Youth Leadership Award for In-School Mentoring, Tahrik is an energetic and enthusiastic young man. His positive personality and perspective are contagious to the younger kids he works with. He is consistently setting a good example to his mentees as an individual who is honest, fair, patient and respectful.
Tahrik is a volunteer with the BBBST program Game On! – a group mentoring program that provides boys and youth with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices. Through non-traditional physical activities complemented with healthy eating support, participants engage in life skills, communication, and emotional health discussions designed to encourage adolescent males to pursue life-long healthy lifestyles.
“One thing we talk about a lot is how food impacts your body, and what it means to eat healthy. We approach these kids with the understanding that to simply lecture on bad foods won’t have an impact, and that it’s important to understand their motivations and situation,” says Mike Bannon, BBBST Coordinator of Game On!
In his role as a volunteer mentor, Tahrik helps lead a group of boys through the curriculum each week. He is responsible for facilitating athletic activities, social discussion and generally ensuring they get the most out of the program.
Game On! is made possible by the support of volunteer mentors, like Tahrik, who are committed to helping the children and youth of Toronto reach their full potential.
