Kevin is an eleventh grade student with a passion for science, math and comic books. In 2009, his mom, Tina, reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto, concerned about the lack of time she had to spend with Kevin and his sister, Stephanie, because of the needs of their younger brother. Within a year, Stephanie was matched with a Big Sister, but Kevin had to wait. It was four years before he got a Big Brother. After such a long time, Kevin wasn’t sure he wanted to be part of the program, but since his sister really enjoyed hanging out with her Big, he agreed to meet Patrick.
Patrick became a Big Brother because of a growing awareness of how fortunate he was and how much he wanted to give back to the community. It took him less than a year to be matched with Kevin.
Kevin and Patrick hit it off right away. They have a lot in common – they even went to the same high school – yet they’re different enough to have plenty to teach each other, which makes hanging out a lot of fun. They particularly enjoy skating, watching hockey, and exploring comic book shops around the city together.
For Kevin, being patient paid off, but we don’t want to keep any other amazing kids waiting.
Kevin’s advice for Littles on the waitlist: “Be calm – it’s worth the wait because it’s great to have someone to connect with and hang out with.”
